How it works
The board

A real board.

Lay any plank, shelf or board on your floor and trace it once, with a controller or your bare hands. The virtual plank locks onto the real one. Every ride starts in your own room: step onto the footprints and the elevator rises out of the floor around you.

The plank from the rooftop to the figure at its tip, with a brass mark drawn at each end and a dashed line between them
Fig. 1  End one at the roof.End two over the drop.

Your feet feel two real edges.
Your eyes insist there is
nothing underneath.

Pinned to the room

A spatial anchor holds the alignment in place. It survives handing the headset over. It is still there tomorrow.

Group play

One headset. Everyone plays.

The person not wearing the headset is the operator. They run the show from a single controller, and a plate on the elevator wall tells them who is up and how far the last rider got.

  1. Send the next rider up.
  2. End a turn at any moment. Even mid fall.
  3. Show the rider the real room the instant they freeze.
  1. The operator in a cap holding a clipboard, pointing at the left controller and its three buttons Take the left controller. You run the show.
  2. The operator explaining a speech bubble of footsteps, a bell and a figure walking back to a rider in a hard hat Brief the rider: walk out, ring the bell, walk back.
  3. Two friends watching from a sofa while the rider in a headset balances on a board, the ride shown on a TV behind Cast it to a TV. The room watches.
  4. The rider handing the hard hat to the next friend while the operator stands by Hand the headset on. Next rider.
Fig. 3  A night of group play, drawn by the game’s own guide.
For the room

Cast to a TV and the room sees what the rider sees. A session scoreboard ranks the riders.

Places

More than one way down.

  1. SkyscraperThe classic.
  2. Volcano RimThe wind gusts, the ground shakes, the plank splits.
  3. Oil RigIn a storm.
  4. Your roomA mixed reality ride.
Your room

Your room. Open sea.

You see your own room through the headset’s cameras. Stand on the pad at the end of your board, and the floor of your room dissolves away around the plank.

Fig. 4  Side view, through the headset.Your board is the only thing left.

The fall ends in a splash.

The far end

Ring the bell. Walk back.

At the far end of the plank there is a bell.

Fig. 5  Side view, roof to bell. Then turn around.

Almost nobody does it first try.

Comfort

Or don’t fall at all.

No Fall mode

Cover your eyes
Both hands over your eyes and the real room is back. Any moment, no controller needed.

Before you step out

  • Why seven seconds?

That is how long the fall from the eightieth floor takes. The number counting down this page is the same clock.

  • Does the rider need a controller?

No. Bare hands do everything on the rider’s side, from marking the board to covering your eyes. In group play, the one controller in the room is the operator’s.

  • Where do I get it?
